THE CITY OF GALLE & UNA WATUNA
This excursion begins with a morning trip to the beautiful Una Watuna beach (30 min) to swim & relax. After lunch we take a 10 minute drive to the historic city of Galle – a World Heritage site – and admire the fantastic examples of Colonial architecture which lie within the famous 17th century Dutch Fort.
A visit to the Dutch Period Museum is a must, and after refreshments at the Rampart Hotel with its wonderful views over the Indian Ocean, a sunset stroll along the rampart walls of the fort is strongly recommended before the 20 min ride back to the hotel. A beautiful day.
TURTLES, MASKS & MOONSTONES
This trip takes in 3 nearby attractions and coupled with a lunch stop makes for a varied & interesting day out.Beginning with a visit to the Turtle Hatchery at Kosgoda – a short drive away – you will see turtles of all sizes and learn something about the conservation work being carried out to protect these fabulous creatures. The trip continues on to the town of Ambalangoda for a short visit to the mask museum to see the famous devil & demon masks of Sri Lankan folk culture.A spot of lunch and the final leg of our tour takes us to the nearby Moonstone mine.
Here you can see the mining in progress as well as gem cutting and polishing before admiring the extensive range of finished jewellery in the factory shop.
JUNGLE & LAGOON
For an interesting half-day trip take a ‘tuk-tuk’ inland and marvel at the lushness of rural Sri Lanka. See paddy fields, cinnamon, tea and rubber plantations; bullock and all manner of bird life. At 5 pm arrive at the lagoon where the trip continues with a sunset boat ride across this most magical & tranquil place with a short stop at the beautiful island monastery. A veritable feast for the bird watcher. Return to the hotel around 7pm. |
